Today is a Gift

It's been a long time since I took a jewellery photo. But since I got my new lens I wanted to try taking a photo of this necklace of mine. I had been eyeing it for over a year at one of my favourite stores. I finally bit the money bullet and bought it and I'm so glad I did! I've worn it every day since! :) Due to a very sensitive allergy to nickel and just my personal style, I'm very particular about my jewellery. It's safe to say this is one of my favourite necklaces. Stamped into it is an important message we all forget sometimes and this serves as a reminder for me.

Yesterday is History. Today is Gift. Tomorrow is a Mystery.

Taking time for the little things

With all of the shoots I've been to lately I felt the urge to just play around with my camera and have myself a little mock shoot. One of my absolute favourite things to photograph is the little details. And where better to find attention to detail than at a wedding. This summer I have gotten my first handful (okay two handfuls) of wedding photography experience. Most brides want the prep and the detailed dress, jewellery and ring photos. So it's easy to see why I picked those things for the theme for this short 45 minute session I gave myself.

I have a closet full of dresses (from a past life) and each one holds a special place in my heart and memories for me. But very few do I love as much as my beautiful Alfred Sung dress-or the Princess Peach dress as we call it. Although I wore a very different dress by a very different designer to my wedding, I adore this dress whole heartedly and have always wanted to give it the attention it deserves, especially since it spends most of it's time in my closet.

And now we introduce some bling...

I haven't seen many brides wear lockets these days but they're an under apreciated gem in my mind...
And now to the part that the Brides-to-be like to see... Ring shots!

One of the many wedding traditions is to include the people you've lost into your wedding. Sometimes in prayer or in a keepsake. When my husband and I were getting married I wasn't to keen on the popular idea of attaching a keepsake to the bridal bouquet. (Mainly because I didn't want to part with my keepsake when I tossed my bouquet.) In the end I didn't attach this charm with a photo of my dad and I- and I always sort of wish I had. So here's my little tribute to a piece that should have been a part of our wedding.

Butterflies and Jewellery

I realized I hadn't posted any pictures lately and this one I snapped off earlier this morning.

Lightbox

Lightbox experiment.... I used regular paper instead of tissue paper on the sides of my homemade lightbox and so I did myself a disservice... Need to replace the paper... But here are a few shots from today.

Randoms

A fellow amateur photographer is participating in a 365 photo competition, one picture each day. I wish I had the time for this, but I never seem to. The idea is to take one random picture a day, it doesn't necessarily have to be meaningful or particularly amazing even. You just have to put effort into it.
Tonight I came home from work and spent nearly 2 hours playing around with my camera, taking pictures of random items. One of my next projects will be to practice the set up of photos, especially when it comes to props. I seem to spend more time trying to find that set up in my head then working on a wide variety of ideas.

Et...voila!

At the recommendation of a photographer friend I have started a photo blog. The idea seemed a little silly to me since I only have a handful of pictures I can post online but oh well! Better to get out there...

As of right now I have a few potential shoots, which is exciting. I received my new Nikon DSLR this month and have been getting used to it and I hope to post more soon!

The necklace featured in this post is an example of my experimenting with the new Nikon. The necklace was handmade by Melissa from thesilvernest on etsy.com
